Chapter 1 - THE WEDDING THAT BECAME A TRAP

The punch landed before the string quartet stopped playing.

Don Roberto’s fist struck Alejandro across the jaw in the center of the candlelit aisle. Gasps swept through the cathedral-like ballroom as the groom staggered into a row of white roses.

Elena stood beneath the crystal chandeliers in her wedding gown.

Her veil had slipped sideways.

The bruise on her cheek was visible to everyone.

Alejandro wiped blood from the corner of his mouth and stared at Don Roberto with the same arrogant expression he had worn minutes earlier when he told Elena she would regret embarrassing him.

“I was teaching her a lesson,” Alejandro said.

The guests fell silent.

Don Roberto stepped between Alejandro and his daughter.

“This wedding is over.”

Elena’s lips trembled, but she did not lower her eyes.

For months, Alejandro had trained her to apologize when he hurt her. He had taught her to cover bruises with makeup, to smile through dinners, and to tell people she had walked into doors.

But not today.

She reached behind the folds of her dress and opened a small white clutch.

Inside was a phone displaying dozens of photographs, threatening messages, financial records, and audio files.

Doña Victoria rose sharply from the front row.

“Elena,” she warned. “Think carefully.”

Elena looked directly at the woman who had spent months convincing her that fear was the same thing as loyalty.

“You should’ve read the clause.”

The great doors opened.

Two officers entered with a detective and Elena’s attorney. Their shoes struck the marble floor with slow, deliberate echoes.

“We have the evidence,” the detective said.

Alejandro’s face finally changed.

His confidence vanished.

Don Roberto took Elena’s hand and pulled her safely behind him.

Alejandro turned toward his mother as Doña Victoria’s champagne glass slipped from her fingers and shattered.

“And so is your family,” Don Roberto said.

But before the officers reached him, Alejandro pointed at Elena and shouted one sentence that made half the guests turn toward her.

“Ask your precious daughter what she signed three months ago!”

Elena went still.

Because Alejandro was right.

She had signed something.
