Chapter 15 - THE FATHER WHO FINALLY SAW
Don Roberto crossed the bridal suite before anyone could stop him.
Alejandro stepped backward.
“It isn’t what it looks like.”
Don Roberto knelt beside Elena.
His hands trembled as he examined the bruise beneath her makeup.
“How long?”
Elena could not answer.
Her silence told him enough.
He looked at the security guards, the frightened stylists, and Victoria standing in the hallway.
“You all knew.”
Victoria remained composed.
“Roberto, emotions are high. Let us speak privately.”
“You watched my daughter walk into this building injured.”
“She is unstable,” Victoria said. “Alejandro has been trying to protect her from herself.”
Don Roberto rose.
For a moment, Elena feared he would attack Alejandro immediately.
She caught his hand.
“Not here. Not yet.”
He looked at her in disbelief.
Elena showed him the evidence phone and explained the injunction, the officers outside, and the transaction scheduled after the merger announcement.
“You planned this?”
“I had to stop them from taking the company and destroying the evidence.”
“You should have come to me.”
“They were watching you. Gabriel was helping them. And I thought the truth would kill you.”
Don Roberto’s eyes filled with tears.
“Losing you would have killed me.”
He wanted to carry her out.
Elena asked him for ten more minutes.
“If we leave now, Victoria will claim this was a family argument. She’ll move the money and disappear.”
Don Roberto looked toward the ballroom doors.
Hundreds of guests were waiting.
Investors were present.
Cameras were present.
So were people who had protected the Varelas for years.
“All right,” he said. “But you do not stand beside him alone.”
Elena repaired neither the veil nor the makeup.
She wanted the bruise visible.
Don Roberto walked her to the entrance of the aisle.
The music began.
Alejandro waited beneath the chandeliers, forcing a smile.
Doña Victoria sat in the front row with the black case at her feet.
Elena took her father’s arm.
“You can stop,” he whispered.
“I already did.”
They began walking.
Not toward a wedding.
