Chapter 12 - THE PRENUP CLAUSE
Claire explained the plan to Elena and Don Roberto in a secured conference room.
The emergency asset pledge contained three protections Alejandro had overlooked.
First, any evidence of coercion allowed Elena to freeze the transfer before funds were released.
Second, any undisclosed criminal liability connected to Varela Capital triggered a mandatory audit.
Third, if Alejandro or Victoria attempted to use the Marquez property to conceal prior losses, their signed management proxies would transfer temporary control of the joint project to an independent trustee.
The clause could not convict them.
But it could prevent them from stealing the land and give investigators lawful access to the transaction records.
“The moment they announce the merger at the wedding,” Claire said, “we serve the injunction.”
The financial-crimes unit would wait outside.
Lucia would provide a sworn statement.
Doctors had documented Elena’s injuries.
The audio recordings proved intimidation.
Yet they still needed evidence showing Victoria’s direct participation in the fraud.
Lucia knew Victoria kept a black ledger in her private office, but obtaining it illegally would make the evidence difficult to use.
Elena proposed another solution.
“Victoria will bring it to the wedding.”
Don Roberto looked doubtful.
“Why would she?”
“Because she doesn’t trust Alejandro.”
Elena knew Victoria reviewed every transaction personally before funds moved. If the merger announcement required final authorization, she would keep the ledger nearby.
Claire arranged for a court-approved tracking order on the relevant financial accounts. The moment Victoria attempted to move investor money through the Marquez pledge, the transaction would be documented.
Elena returned to Alejandro the next morning.
She wore makeup over the swelling on her cheek.
She apologized for trying to leave.
“I was scared,” she told him.
Alejandro studied her for a long time.
Then he pulled her into his arms.
“You make me become someone I hate when you fight me.”
Elena forced herself not to recoil.
He informed her that the ceremony had been moved forward and that the merger would be announced immediately after the vows.
“Once we’re married,” he said, “none of this matters anymore.”
Elena lowered her eyes.
“That’s what your mother said.”
Alejandro smiled.
He believed she had surrendered.
But as he kissed her forehead, Elena saw a black leather case on the table behind him.
Doña Victoria had arrived.
