Chapter 2 - THE MAN EVERYONE TRUSTED

Eight months before the wedding, Alejandro Varela looked like the safest man Elena had ever met.
He remembered the names of hotel employees.
He called elderly investors personally.
He visited children’s hospitals without bringing photographers.
At least, that was what Elena believed.
She met him at a charity gala hosted by Marquez Holdings, the hospitality company her father had spent forty years building.
Elena had recently returned to Miami after managing the company’s West Coast properties. She was thirty-one, respected by the board, and determined to prove she had earned her position rather than inherited it.
Alejandro approached her beside a silent-auction table.
“You’re bidding against me,” he said.
The item was a child’s drawing from the hospital’s art program.
Elena raised her paddle again. “Then bid higher.”
He laughed and doubled his offer.
When he won, he gave the drawing to Elena.
“I only wanted to see how stubborn you were.”
Don Roberto watched from across the ballroom.
He did not smile.
The Marquez and Varela families had known each other for decades. Varela Capital had financed resorts, ports, and luxury developments throughout Florida.
Doña Victoria controlled the company after her husband’s death. Alejandro was her only son and public successor.
On paper, they were powerful.
In public, they were untouchable.
Alejandro began sending Elena coffee before meetings. He listened when she spoke about modernizing her father’s hotels. He told her he admired women who understood business.
Most importantly, he never seemed threatened by her ambition.
Within weeks, they were inseparable.
“Elena is happy,” Don Roberto’s advisers told him.
But Don Roberto noticed something they did not.
Alejandro never asked Elena what she wanted unless other people were listening.
In private, he told her what they should want together.
When Alejandro proposed on the rooftop of a Marquez hotel, hundreds of white lights illuminated the words MARRY ME.
Elena cried.
Don Roberto embraced her afterward, but his hands were tense.
“Are you sure?” he whispered.
Elena looked at Alejandro smiling among their families.
“I’ve never been more sure.”
Across the rooftop, Doña Victoria raised her champagne glass.
She was smiling too.
But she was not looking at the newly engaged couple.

She was looking at the hotel beneath their feet.
👉 Don Roberto thought Victoria wanted a wedding between two powerful families—until she requested access to something no future mother-in-law should have needed.
