Chapter 13 - THE BLACK LEDGER

Doña Victoria guarded the black case more carefully than her jewelry.

She carried it into Alejandro’s study and locked the door.

Elena waited until the house filled with decorators, caterers, and wedding staff.

Then she created a distraction.

She told Alejandro that a delivery truck had damaged the antique gates. As he and Victoria rushed outside, Elena slipped into the study using a key Lucia had kept from her years as an assistant.

The case contained a laptop, account tokens, and a handwritten ledger.

Elena photographed every page.

The entries documented payments to Gabriel, building inspectors, loan officers, and shell-company directors.

One payment appeared beside the initials A.V. settlement.

Another listed L.C. silence agreement—Lucia Cruz.

Then Elena saw her own name.

E.M. compliance strategy: psychological pressure approved.

Beside it was Victoria’s signature.

Elena’s hands began shaking.

The abuse had not merely been ignored.

It had been discussed as a business tactic.

On the final pages, she found planned transfers scheduled for the wedding day. Investor money would be used to cover Varela’s oldest losses immediately after the merger announcement.

The waterfront property would then secure a new loan, hiding the missing funds for another year.

Elena photographed the transfer instructions and sent them to Claire.

A floorboard creaked behind her.

Alejandro stood in the doorway.

He looked at the open case.

Then at the phone in Elena’s hand.

For once, he did not shout.

He shut the door quietly.

“My mother was right about you.”

Elena backed away.

“You planned my abuse.”

“I planned nothing. I tried to keep you calm.”

“You called terror a compliance strategy.”

Alejandro snatched the phone, but Elena had already transmitted the images.

He checked the screen and saw the confirmation.

His face twisted with panic.

Then Victoria entered.

When she understood what had happened, she did not look frightened.

She looked disappointed.

“I offered you a place in this family,” she told Elena.

“You offered me a cage.”

Victoria turned to Alejandro.

“Make sure she reaches the altar.”

Alejandro seized Elena’s arm.

The wedding was less than three hours away.

And now the Varelas knew their bride had evidence that could bury them.

👉 Victoria no longer needed Elena’s love or cooperation—she needed Elena smiling at the altar long enough for the fraudulent transfer to begin.
