Chapter 19 - THE DAY SHE TOOK BACK HER VOICE
Alejandro stared at Elena throughout the trial.
His attorneys advised him not to react, but his anger appeared whenever she spoke.
Elena described the first bruise.
The broken phone.
The locked bedroom.
The threats against her father.
The assault hours before the wedding.
At first, her voice shook.
Then she looked toward Don Roberto.
He was sitting behind the prosecutor with Lucia, Claire, and several former Varela employees.
None of them looked away.
Elena continued.
Alejandro’s attorney suggested she had remained in the relationship because she wanted access to Varela Capital.
Elena answered calmly.
“I remained because he threatened thousands of employees, my father’s health, and the company my parents built. That was not consent. It was coercion.”
The prosecutor played the wedding recording.
Alejandro’s own words filled the courtroom.
“I was teaching her a lesson.”
He lowered his head.
Victoria testified in her own defense.
She blamed Alejandro, Gabriel, Lucia, and the dead founder of the company.
The jury did not believe her.
Alejandro was convicted on nearly every count.
Victoria was convicted of financial crimes, conspiracy, obstruction, witness intimidation, and charges arising from Sofia’s case.
Their sentences ensured they would spend decades in prison.
Gabriel received a reduced sentence for cooperation but lost his wealth, position, and reputation.
The court ordered the sale of Varela assets to repay investors and compensate victims.
A separate fund was created for employees who had lost pensions or wages.
Lucia received a formal apology from the state for the false theft allegations that had followed her for years.
Sofia’s death certificate was amended to reflect that her death resulted from criminal actions rather than driver error.
After sentencing, Alejandro asked to speak to Elena.
She declined.
He sent a letter claiming he had loved her.
She returned it unopened through her attorney.
Don Roberto later apologized for not recognizing the changes in his daughter sooner.
“You did nothing wrong,” Elena told him.
“I should have seen.”
“You see me now.”
He held her and cried.
Months later, Elena stood before the Marquez board. The directors unanimously elected her chief executive.
She accepted under one condition.
The company would establish permanent safeguards so no family member, executive, or romantic partner could ever use private debt to gain control again.
