Chapter 4 - THE FIRST BRUISE

The first bruise appeared on Elena’s wrist.
It happened after a dinner with potential investors.
Alejandro had spent the evening promising that the waterfront agreement would be finalized before the wedding.
Elena waited until they were alone in the elevator.
“You had no right to promise that.”
Alejandro continued watching the floor numbers.
“Our families already agreed in principle.”
“My father and I agreed to nothing.”
The elevator doors opened to the private garage.
Elena stepped out, but Alejandro caught her wrist.
His fingers tightened.
“You contradicted me in front of people who matter.”
“You’re hurting me.”
“Then stop pulling away.”
His grip became harder before he suddenly released her.
Elena stared at the red marks around her wrist.
Alejandro’s anger disappeared instantly.
He looked horrified.
He apologized repeatedly. He said he had panicked because the project was under pressure. He claimed his father had been physically cruel and that he had sworn never to become like him.
He cried.
Elena comforted the man who had hurt her.
The next morning, he sent five hundred white roses to her office.
That evening, Doña Victoria noticed the bruise.
Elena expected concern.
Instead, Victoria closed the sitting-room door.
“Men carrying great responsibility sometimes lose control,” she said.
“He grabbed me.”
“And he feels terrible. Do you intend to destroy his reputation over one mistake?”
Elena said no.
She was not planning to destroy anyone.
She only wanted it never to happen again.
Victoria gave her a silk scarf to cover the mark before a family dinner.
“People enjoy inventing scandals,” she said. “A good woman protects the man she loves from misunderstandings.”
Elena wore the scarf.
Alejandro was tender for weeks afterward.
He scheduled therapy.
He stopped drinking.
He asked permission before touching her.
Elena convinced herself the incident had frightened him enough to change.
Then she discovered the therapy appointments had never existed.
When she confronted him, he did not apologize.
He leaned close and whispered, “You need to stop searching for reasons not to trust me.”
That night, Elena photographed the fading bruise before deleting the picture.
Or so Alejandro believed.
She had secretly restored it and placed it inside a hidden folder on an encrypted phone.
