Chapter 3 - THE FIRST CONDITION

Doña Victoria requested a private meeting two weeks after the engagement.
She arrived at Marquez headquarters with three attorneys and a merger proposal.
The marriage, she explained, created an opportunity to combine the two family companies.
Varela Capital would finance a massive waterfront resort on land owned by the Marquez family. Marquez Holdings would contribute the property and its hotel-management network.
The project would create thousands of jobs.
It would also make Elena and Alejandro one of the most influential couples in the state.
Don Roberto closed the proposal without signing it.
“My daughter’s marriage is not a corporate acquisition.”
Victoria smiled politely.
“Of course not. But responsible families prepare for the future.”
Alejandro later told Elena that his mother was old-fashioned.
“She thinks business protects marriages.”
Elena studied the proposal herself.
The numbers were impressive, but several sections troubled her. Varela wanted temporary control over the waterfront property during construction. It also wanted access to Marquez Holdings’ internal credit lines.
Elena refused.
Alejandro did not become angry.
Not then.
He took her face gently in both hands.
“That’s why I love you,” he said. “You don’t sign anything blindly.”
The comment reassured her.
Over the next month, however, he returned to the proposal repeatedly.
He mentioned the employees who would benefit.
The families who needed jobs.
The investors who were counting on them.
Whenever Elena objected, he framed her refusal as selfishness.
At dinner one evening, Doña Victoria placed a hand over Elena’s.
“A wife must learn the difference between independence and disloyalty.”
Don Roberto heard her.
He set down his glass.
“My daughter will remain independent after marriage.”
Victoria’s expression hardened for half a second before the smile returned.
Alejandro changed the subject.
Later, in the car, he accused Elena of allowing her father to humiliate his mother.
“He defended me,” Elena said.
“He made you look like a child who needs permission.”
Alejandro gripped the steering wheel.
Elena had never heard that tone from him.
When she asked him to slow down, he pulled to the curb and apologized.
He kissed her hand and blamed stress.
But that night, Elena woke to find him standing near her desk.
He was holding a folder containing her family’s confidential property records.
When she asked how he had gotten it, Alejandro smiled.
“You left it open.”
May you like
Elena knew she had not.
👉 That folder was the first proof that Alejandro’s courtship had opened doors inside the Marquez company—but Elena still did not know who had given him the key.
