Chapter 9 - The Paper on the Table
The waiver agreement lay on the coffee table.
Nathan stood beside it.
Madison sat on the sofa, drinking champagne.
Sophia entered wearing white satin pajamas.
She had been asleep when Nathan ordered the housekeeper to wake her.
“Sit down,” Nathan said.
Sophia remained standing.
“What is this?”
“You know what it is.”
“I know it contains lies.”
Nathan placed a pen beside the agreement.
“You signed off on the Sable payments.”
“I have no company authority.”
“You advised me.”
“That is not approval.”
“It will be once you sign.”
Madison crossed her legs.
“You should be grateful. Nathan is offering you a clean exit.”
Sophia looked at her.
“With my mother’s necklace around your neck?”
Madison touched the pendant.
“Nathan gave it to me again.”
Sophia moved toward her.
Nathan blocked the way.
“Sign first.”
“No.”
He lowered his voice.
“You will sign, apologize to Madison and leave quietly.”
“And if I refuse?”
Nathan picked up the leather belt he had removed after returning from dinner.
Sophia stared at it.
The man she married had once cried because he accidentally broke a glass photograph frame.
Now he was holding a weapon as though violence were a normal negotiation.
“You would hit me for a signature?” she asked.
Nathan looked toward Madison.
He could not retreat in front of her.
“You have humiliated me for months.”
Sophia almost laughed.
“I have been silent.”
“Your silence is judgment.”
“No. Your conscience is.”
Nathan slapped her.
The force turned her head.
Sophia fell against the side table.
Her phone struck the floor.
Madison inhaled sharply.
Nathan stared at his own hand.
Then Madison said, “She pushed you too far.”
That sentence gave him permission.
He grabbed Sophia by the shoulder and forced her toward the floor.
She fought to stay upright.
He raised the belt.
“Apologize to her.”
Sophia looked at the phone near the sofa.
The screen was cracked but still lit.
She had activated the emergency recording before entering the room.
The evidence was already uploading.
She crawled toward it.
Nathan laughed.
“Who are you calling?”
Sophia opened the contact marked Dad.
She had reached the phrase they created months earlier.
Not because the financial evidence was finally complete.
May you like
Because her life was now in danger.
👉 Nathan believed the phone call was a desperate bluff, unaware that every lender, director and investigator needed only Sophia’s final command.
