Chapter 7 - The Wife They Planned to Blame
Ryan found the payment inside a confidential expense folder.
Brooks Holdings had transferred twelve million dollars into a company called Sable Advisory.
Madison controlled Sable.
The payment was described as a strategic communications fee.
Attached to it was a draft public statement.
The statement accused Sophia of secretly authorizing failed property acquisitions.
It claimed she had used her access as Nathan’s wife to influence decisions.
It described Nathan as a betrayed husband attempting to repair the company after discovering her misconduct.
Ryan read it twice.
Sophia held no official position.
She did not have signing authority.
The accusation made no sense unless Nathan intended to create false documents.
Ryan copied the file and sent it to the secure address Sophia provided.
Alexander’s legal team received it.
They traced Sable Advisory.
Madison had already used the money to purchase a Malibu house and an interest in a private club.
Nathan expected Brooks Holdings to absorb the loss.
If regulators discovered the payments, he would claim Sophia had approved them through informal marital influence.
The false story explained why Nathan had begun telling friends Sophia was unstable and obsessed with company money.
He was preparing witnesses.
At home, Sophia noticed invitations arriving without her name.
Nathan attended events with Madison.
Photographers captured them together.
Anonymous gossip accounts called Sophia a reclusive wife who refused to support her successful husband.
When she challenged Nathan, he smiled.
“No one believes the quiet spouse.”
“Is that what you’re counting on?”
“It’s reality.”
“You think silence means guilt?”
“I think people believe the person they see.”
Nathan pointed toward the mirror.
“Look at yourself. You hide in this house while Madison helps me run an empire.”
Sophia looked at him.
“The empire existed before Madison.”
“It barely existed before me.”
That answer told Sophia everything.
Nathan had erased the lenders, architects, employees and capital that saved him.
He had erased her.
Later that evening, Madison arrived with garment bags.
She announced she would be staying in the guest suite.
Sophia objected.
Nathan stood between them.
“Madison received threats after the press coverage.”
“Then hire security.”
“She feels safest here.”
“In my house?”
Nathan leaned close.
“If you make this difficult, you can leave.”
Sophia went upstairs.
She messaged Alexander.
The situation is escalating.
His reply came immediately.
Come home.
Sophia typed:
Not until the board evidence is complete.
Then Madison entered the bedroom without knocking.
She held Sophia’s mother’s necklace.
“Nathan says I should wear this to tomorrow’s dinner.”
Sophia’s restraint finally cracked.
She took the necklace from Madison’s hand.
Madison screamed before Sophia even touched her.
