Chapter 8 - The Lie Before the Bruise
“She attacked me,” Madison cried.
Nathan moved toward Sophia.
“She walked into my bedroom wearing my mother’s necklace.”
“I was returning it,” Madison said.
“You were smiling.”
Nathan did not ask what happened.
He had already chosen the answer that protected his affair.
“Give it back,” he ordered.
“No.”
“Sophia.”
“My mother wore this the night she died. Madison will not wear it.”
Nathan reached for the necklace.
Sophia stepped backward.
Madison touched his arm.
“Let her keep it. She clearly needs something to feel important.”
Sophia looked at her.
“Leave my house.”
Madison lowered her eyes as though wounded.
Nathan grabbed Sophia’s upper arm.
“Apologize.”
“For telling your mistress to leave?”
His grip tightened.
Sophia pulled away.
Nathan shoved her.
She struck the bedroom dresser.
Pain shot through her hip.
Nathan froze.
Madison stopped smiling.
Sophia slowly stood.
“You pushed me.”
“You lost your balance.”
“No.”
Nathan’s expression changed.
Not to regret.
To calculation.
He looked toward Madison.
“She came at you.”
Madison understood.
“She did.”
Sophia stared at both of them.
They were writing the lie while she was still standing in front of them.
She walked into the bathroom and locked the door.
Her hands shook as she photographed the swelling.
She sent the image to the legal team.
Alexander called immediately.
“Leave tonight.”
Sophia pressed a towel against her hip.
“I need Ryan’s internal files.”
“I don’t care about the files.”
“I do.”
“You are my daughter before you are a witness.”
Sophia began crying.
“I need to know I can finish something without you deciding for me.”
Alexander became quiet.
Then he said, “Finishing does not require sacrificing yourself.”
Sophia promised she would leave within forty-eight hours.
That night, Ryan sent the final evidence.
Nathan had scheduled an emergency board vote.
He planned to transfer the company’s best assets to Madison’s shell company the following Monday.
Before the vote, he intended to force Sophia to sign a marital waiver.
The document stated she accepted full responsibility for several unauthorized payments.
Sophia understood the timeline.
Nathan did not merely want her gone.
He needed her signature before she left.
She packed a small bag and hid it inside the garage.
Before dawn, Nathan discovered copies of the waiver documents missing from his office.
Security footage showed Sophia entering.
He canceled her bank cards.
