Chapter 11 - The Money Beneath the Name
Police separated everyone.
A female officer helped Sophia stand.
Madison attempted to leave through the side hallway.
Security blocked her.
Nathan remained near the coffee table, staring at Alexander.
“You invested in Brooks Holdings?”
Alexander handed him a financial summary.
Vale Meridian controlled the debt beneath seven major Brooks developments.
It held protective voting rights.
It owned preferred shares that could convert into majority control if Nathan committed fraud or transferred secured assets without authorization.
Nathan scanned the figures.
“This can’t be right.”
“You signed every agreement,” Alexander said.
“Sophia explained them.”
“Yes.”
Nathan looked at her.
“You knew?”
“I helped structure the first rescue.”
“You let me believe I saved the company.”
“I helped you save it.”
“You were testing me?”
“I was loving you without using my name as a weapon.”
Nathan pointed toward Alexander.
“He bought my success.”
Alexander’s voice became colder.
“My capital kept your employees paid. Sophia’s strategy made your projects profitable. You received every opportunity to build something legitimate.”
Nathan looked at Sophia’s bruised face.
Still, his first concern was the company.
“What happens now?”
The attorney answered.
“The board has suspended you pending investigation.”
“You can’t remove me.”
“The independent directors can.”
“I own Brooks Holdings.”
“Your common shares are heavily pledged. Without Vale Meridian’s credit support, you control a name attached to insolvent projects.”
Nathan staggered toward a chair.
Madison spoke quickly.
“Nathan made all financial decisions.”
He turned toward her.
“What?”
“I was an employee.”
“You own Sable Advisory.”
“You instructed me to create it.”
“You said it was protected.”
Madison’s loyalty disappeared the moment money did.
Sophia watched them turn on each other.
She felt no victory.
Only exhaustion.
The detective approached her.
“Mrs. Brooks, we need medical photographs and a statement.”
Nathan looked up.
“She attacked Madison.”
The emergency recording was still running on Sophia’s phone.
The officer picked it up.
Nathan’s own voice played from the speaker.
Apologize to her.
Then the slap.
Then Sophia asking whether he would hit her for a signature.
No one spoke.
Madison sat slowly.
Nathan finally understood that the financial investigation was no longer his only danger.
He had committed assault while attempting to force a fraudulent signature.
The detective placed him under arrest.
As officers led him away, Nathan looked back at Sophia.
“I loved you.”
Sophia held Alexander’s jacket closed around her body.
