Chapter 12 - Ryan’s Decision
Ryan spent the next fourteen hours inside a conference room with investigators.
He surrendered emails, payment records and calendar entries.
He admitted he had ignored warning signs.
Nathan had ordered him to cancel Sophia’s access to company events.
Madison instructed him to redirect calls from auditors.
He had obeyed because Nathan controlled his career.
“I kept telling myself it was personal,” Ryan said. “Then I found the Sable payment.”
The investigators asked why he contacted Sophia instead of the board.
“Because the board chairman played golf with Nathan every week.”
Ryan was right.
The chairman had approved several questionable transactions without review.
Other directors accepted private trips and expensive gifts.
The corruption was wider than Sophia expected.
Nathan used Brooks Holdings as a personal treasury.
Madison’s companies received more than forty million dollars.
Nathan purchased luxury vehicles through construction budgets.
He paid social media accounts to attack Sophia.
He even used company funds to hire a private investigator to follow her.
The investigator had discovered Sophia’s meetings with Alexander.
Nathan knew she had contact with Vale Meridian.
But he misunderstood the relationship.
He believed Sophia was having an affair with an older financier.
That assumption fueled his rage.
In one message to Madison, Nathan wrote:
She thinks some rich old man will protect her. Once she signs, she’ll have nothing worth protecting.
Sophia read the message in the hospital.
A doctor had documented bruising on her face, shoulder, back and knees.
Her collarbone was not broken, but the surrounding tissue was badly injured.
Alexander sat beside her.
“I should have taken you away sooner.”
Sophia shook her head.
“You respected my choice.”
“I respected it after it became dangerous.”
“You warned me.”
“I am your father. Warning was not enough.”
Sophia looked toward the window.
“You couldn’t rescue me before I was ready to leave.”
Alexander absorbed the truth.
For most of Sophia’s life, he had confused protection with control.
Nathan had done the same in a crueler form.
Alexander touched her hand carefully.
“What do you need now?”
“Not a plan.”
He nodded.
“Then I’ll sit here.”
They remained in silence.
Meanwhile, the board voted to suspend Nathan permanently and remove the chairman.
Ryan was placed under protected whistleblower status.
He had helped too late to call himself innocent.
But early enough to prevent the final transfer.
The following morning, Madison requested a deal.
She offered evidence against Nathan.
Investigators asked what she wanted.
“Immunity.”
They refused.
