Chapter 3 - The Marriage Without a Name
Nathan proposed after fourteen months.
He did it on the rooftop of Brooks Holdings’ first completed apartment building.
The project had been redesigned using Sophia’s plan and financed by Vale Meridian.
The building sold out before construction ended.
Nathan held up a modest ring.
“One day, I’ll give you the life you deserve.”
Sophia smiled through tears.
“I already have the life I chose.”
They married at a small coastal inn.
Alexander did not attend.
He and Sophia had begun speaking again, but their relationship remained fragile.
Instead, he sent a handwritten letter.
Build a marriage where neither of you has to disappear for the other to feel important.
Sophia kept the letter.
Nathan never saw it.
He believed Sophia’s father was a stubborn retired businessman who disapproved of him.
Sophia did not correct him.
For the first two years, the marriage was happy.
Nathan asked for her advice.
They ate takeout on the floor of unfinished buildings.
He called her before signing contracts.
She sat beside him during sleepless nights and helped him turn Brooks Holdings from a regional developer into a national company.
Vale Meridian invested again.
Then again.
Each investment was structured through different funds.
Nathan knew one private group had supported several projects.
He did not know Alexander controlled all of them.
Sophia’s name appeared nowhere.
She asked her father to keep it that way.
“I don’t want Nathan to feel purchased,” she said.
Alexander answered, “A good man would feel grateful. A dangerous man would feel entitled.”
Nathan’s behavior began changing after the company’s valuation passed one billion dollars.
He hired image consultants.
He replaced old friends with celebrities and financiers.
He stopped mentioning Sophia’s role in the company’s early strategy.
During interviews, he described himself as a self-made visionary.
Sophia watched from their living room as he told a television host, “No one believed in Brooks Holdings except me.”
She waited for him to mention her.
He did not.
That evening, she asked why.
“The interview was about business,” Nathan said.
“I helped build the business.”
“You gave advice.”
“So did the consultants you thanked.”
Nathan sighed.
“Do you need credit for everything?”
It was the first time he made Sophia feel embarrassed for remembering the truth.
It would not be the last.
Three months later, Madison Reed joined Brooks Holdings as head of public relations.
