Chapter 2 - The Girl in the Small Apartment
Five years earlier, Nathan first met Sophia in a coffee shop near downtown Los Angeles.
She wore an inexpensive blue dress and worked on an old laptop held together by a strip of silver tape.
Nathan was not wealthy then.
Brooks Holdings was little more than a struggling real estate company inherited from his late grandfather. Its debts were rising. Two unfinished developments were close to foreclosure.
Nathan entered the coffee shop after a lender canceled another meeting.
Every table was full except the chair across from Sophia.
“Is anyone sitting here?” he asked.
“No.”
He stayed for three hours.
Sophia listened while he complained about banks, investors and the pressure to save his family name.
She asked questions no one else had asked.
Why was he trying to build luxury towers when the market was demanding smaller housing?
Why had he placed every project under one debt structure?
Why did he keep his most expensive executive team while laying off engineers?
Nathan stared at her.
“What do you do?”
“I help my father review investments.”
He pictured a small family business.
He did not ask more.
Within a week, Sophia helped him reorganize his development plan.
Within a month, a private investment group called Vale Meridian offered Brooks Holdings a rescue package.
Nathan called it a miracle.
Sophia called it good timing.
He never knew she had sent his documents to her father.
Alexander Vale controlled one of the largest private investment networks in the country. His companies owned logistics centers, technology firms, hotels and commercial property across several continents.
Sophia was his only daughter.
But she had left his penthouse at twenty-four after a painful argument.
Alexander had tried to choose her career, her friends and even the man he thought she should marry.
Sophia wanted a life not shaped by his name.
She moved into a small apartment.
She used her late mother’s last name.
She refused her family allowance.
Alexander respected her decision, even while quietly ensuring she was safe.
When Sophia introduced Nathan to him as a business opportunity, Alexander saw potential in the company but uncertainty in the man.
“Does he know who you are?” Alexander asked.
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I want to know how he treats me when he believes I have nothing.”
Alexander studied his daughter.
“And if he fails that test?”
“Then I leave.”
At the time, Sophia believed leaving would be easy.
She did not yet love Nathan.
