Chapter 1 - The Call From the Floor
“Apologize to her.”
Nathan Brooks stood over his wife with a black leather belt raised in one hand.
Sophia knelt on the polished wood floor of their Beverly Hills living room. Her white satin pajamas were twisted at the shoulder. Her hair covered half her face, but it could not hide the purple bruise spreading across her cheek.
Madison sat on the cream-colored sofa in a red silk dress, watching as if the scene had been arranged for her entertainment.
Sophia pressed one hand to her aching shoulder.
“For what?” she whispered.
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“For embarrassing Madison at dinner.”
“I asked why she was wearing my necklace.”
Madison touched the diamond pendant resting against her throat.
“Nathan said you never wore it.”
“It belonged to my mother.”
Nathan lifted the belt higher.
“Apologize.”
Sophia had spent three years lowering her voice to keep peace inside this house.
That night, something inside her became still.
She looked at Madison.
Then at Nathan.
“No.”
Nathan’s arm moved.
The belt struck the floor beside Sophia with a sharp crack.
She flinched, crawled toward the sofa and reached for the phone lying near Madison’s heel.
Nathan laughed.
“Who are you going to call? Your landlord from that apartment I rescued you from?”
Madison leaned back.
“Maybe then he’ll let you stay.”
Sophia opened a contact saved under one word.
Dad.
Nathan’s smile widened.
He had never met Sophia’s father.
He believed the man was either poor, ashamed or dead.
Sophia pressed the phone against her ear.
Her split lip trembled, but her voice did not.
“Dad…”
A man answered immediately.
Sophia looked directly at Nathan.
“Ruin his life.”
Across the city, Alexander Vale rose from behind a black marble desk. Financial screens glowed behind him. On one screen was a file marked BROOKS HOLDINGS — EMERGENCY CONTROL REVIEW.
“It’s already begun,” he said.
Nathan’s phone vibrated.
Then Madison’s.
Bank alerts appeared one after another.
CREDIT FACILITY SUSPENDED.
BOARD MEETING CALLED.
AUTHORIZED SIGNATORY ACCESS FROZEN.
The front door opened.
Ryan, Nathan’s executive assistant, rushed inside with a white face.
“Mr. Brooks… we have an emergency.”
Nathan turned toward Sophia.
She was still kneeling.
Yet she was the calmest person in the room.

And for the first time, Nathan understood that the poor wife he had humiliated might be the only reason he had ever become rich.
👉 The collapse had begun before Sophia made the call, because Nathan’s empire had been built on money he never knew belonged to her.
