Chapter 7 - The Classified File
Megan read the message twice.
Robert noticed the change in her expression.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“That is not nothing.”
She slipped the phone back into her clutch.
Across the room, Diane watched closely.
Too closely.
Megan realized the invitation may never have been about Lauren.
Diane knew Megan’s name before the wedding.
She may not have known about Daniel’s rescue, but she knew Megan was connected to something the Parker family wanted hidden.
Megan asked Diane:
“Who told you I had a history?”
Diane folded her arms.
“Lauren did.”
Lauren immediately shook her head.
“I never said that.”
Diane looked at her daughter-in-law.
“You said Megan had government problems.”
“I said she once worked for the government.”
Megan’s pulse quickened.
She had never told Lauren that.
“Who told you?”
Lauren looked toward Evan.
The groom went still.
Evan said, “I found something when we ran guest names through the venue’s security system.”
Robert frowned.
“You screened wedding guests?”
“For safety.”
“You searched her name.”
Evan admitted the system returned a restricted federal notice.
It did not reveal details.
It only warned that Megan’s identity required special handling.
Evan told Diane.
Diane became convinced Megan might bring scandal to the wedding.
So she isolated her.
Robert looked disgusted.
But Megan understood something more serious.
A wedding venue could not access that kind of notice.
Someone had deliberately planted it.
The secure message in her clutch confirmed it.
The Parker file had been opened because someone inside the family had requested information that should have remained sealed.
