Chapter 13 - Robert’s Public Apology
Robert returned to the center of the dance floor.
He asked the band to turn off the music.
The ballroom became completely silent.
He stood beside Megan.
“My family treated this woman as if her value depended on whether she arrived with a husband, money, or social status.”
Diane said, “Robert, stop.”
He continued.
“She arrived alone because courage often does.”
Megan looked at him.
She did not enjoy public praise.
But Robert was not praising her to make himself look generous.
He was correcting a humiliation his family created.
He faced the guests.
“Some of you laughed.”
Phones slowly lowered.
“Some recorded her because you believed isolation was shameful.”
No one spoke.
“My son is standing here because she refused to leave him behind.”
Daniel moved beside Megan.
Robert continued.
“And tonight, members of my own family tried to steal evidence connected to the reason he was injured.”
Lauren’s hand rose to her mouth.
Evan looked toward Diane with open disgust.
Robert removed the Parker family pin from his jacket.
He placed it on the table.
“This name does not make us honorable. Our choices do.”
Then he turned to Megan.
“I am sorry.”
Megan nodded once.
She accepted the apology.
Not because it repaired everything.
Because Robert understood that gratitude without accountability was only performance.
Federal agents entered the reception hall.
Diane’s knees nearly gave way.
