Chapter 2 - The Sister at the Wrong Table

Megan had almost refused the invitation.

Lauren called six weeks before the wedding and said their mother wanted both daughters present.

Megan knew that was not true.

Their mother had died five years earlier.

Lauren only mentioned her when she needed Megan to feel guilty.

“You’re still family,” Lauren said.

But the invitation arrived without a guest option.

The seating card placed Megan near the kitchen doors.

No one asked whether she had traveled safely.

No one offered her a room.

When she entered the reception hall, Diane looked her up and down.

“You wore black to a wedding?”

Megan answered calmly.

“It was the only formal dress I owned.”

Diane smiled.

“That explains a lot.”

Lauren heard the remark.

She said nothing.

Years earlier, Megan would have defended herself.

Now she had learned that silence often revealed more about cruel people than argument ever could.

She stayed because Lauren was still her sister.

She stayed because their mother once made Megan promise that she would never abandon her.

And she stayed because Robert Parker’s name appeared on the guest list.

Megan had not seen him in nine years.

The last time, he stood outside a military hospital holding a folded American flag while doctors told him his son would never walk again.

Megan had disappeared before Robert could thank her.

She never expected him to recognize her beneath formal hair and makeup.

But the moment he bowed, she knew he had.

And the secret she had protected for nearly a decade was about to enter the center of Lauren’s wedding.
