Chapter 28 - Lauren Starts Again
Lauren moved into a small apartment near Megan.
At first, she hated the silence.
The Parker home had staff, flowers, and constant events.
Her new apartment had noisy pipes and one folding chair.
Megan helped her carry boxes.
“You do not have to stay,” Lauren said.
“I know.”
That answer made Lauren cry.
She found work at a community arts center.
For the first time, her income came from something unrelated to a husband or family approval.
She began therapy.
She admitted that she had spent years competing with Megan.
Their mother praised Megan’s strength because Megan carried responsibilities Lauren never saw.
Lauren interpreted that strength as superiority.
Instead of asking what Megan survived, she resented her.
“I let them humiliate you because I wanted them to choose me,” Lauren said.
Megan replied, “They only choose people they can control.”
Lauren asked whether Megan forgave her.
“Not completely.”
Lauren nodded.
She had learned not to demand emotional rewards for admitting wrongdoing.
Months passed.
The sisters shared coffee.
Then holidays.
Then small pieces of their mother’s memory.
Trust returned slowly.
Not because the wedding disappeared.
Because Lauren stopped pretending it was only one bad moment.
