Chapter 18 - The Ballroom Locks Down

Robert’s security team quietly closed the ballroom doors.

The lead federal agent reached inside his jacket.

Daniel stepped between him and Megan.

Robert’s guards raised their hands but did not draw weapons.

No one wanted panic among hundreds of guests.

Megan spoke calmly.

“Remove your hand.”

The agent smiled.

“You still give orders like you are in uniform.”

“I am asking once.”

He withdrew an identification wallet.

Robert’s security director scanned it.

The number belonged to a retired agent.

The man had entered using false credentials.

The other supposed agents looked toward the exits.

Two were detained immediately.

One ran toward the service corridor and was stopped by venue security.

Diane heard the commotion from the private room.

She began shouting that she wanted protection.

Megan entered.

“Who did you call before the wedding?”

Diane looked at her attorney.

He advised silence.

Megan placed the photograph of Samir on the table.

Diane’s face changed.

“You thought he was dead,” Megan said.

Diane whispered, “He should be.”

The attorney closed his eyes.

The statement had been recorded.

Diane realized her mistake.

Megan asked who controlled the false federal team.

Diane said nothing more.

Then Robert entered with a name.

Charles Voss.

Former government contracting officer.

Current Parker Foundation security consultant.

And the man who approved every investigation report clearing Diane’s company.

Voss had built a private network powerful enough to manipulate contracts, evidence, and witnesses.

The wedding trap had been his plan.

Diane was guilty.

But she was not the most powerful person behind the operation.
