Chapter 3 - Robert Parker’s Son
Robert Parker had only one child.
Captain Daniel Parker joined the Army against his father’s wishes.
Robert built hotels, shipping companies, and private medical centers across California.
He believed influence could protect the people he loved.
Daniel believed service meant accepting risks money could not remove.
Nine years earlier, Daniel’s unit was sent to assist civilians trapped after an embassy attack overseas.
The official report stated that Daniel was injured during evacuation.
It did not describe what happened afterward.
The vehicle carrying him was hit.
The radio failed.
The rest of the team believed the position could not be held.
Megan Brooks, then a military trauma specialist attached to the evacuation unit, refused to leave Daniel behind.
She dragged him from the wreckage.
She treated a chest wound while bullets struck the concrete around them.
When Daniel lost consciousness, Megan carried him nearly half a mile to a secondary extraction point.
She broke two fingers.
Tore a ligament in her shoulder.
And suffered hearing damage from the explosion.
Daniel survived.
Megan’s name never appeared in the public account.
The operation was classified.
Robert received only a short military notice saying an unidentified service member had saved his son.
For years, he searched for that person.
Then, at his nephew’s wedding, he saw a faint scar across Megan’s wrist.
Daniel had described that scar.
A crescent-shaped burn from a damaged radio battery.
Robert looked into her eyes and knew.
