Chapter 30 - The Next Wedding

Two years later, Megan attended another wedding.
Daniel married a physical therapist he met during rehabilitation.
The ceremony was small.
No reporters.
No social hierarchy.
No table hidden beside a service door.
Megan arrived alone again.
This time, no one laughed.
Lauren sat beside her.
Robert welcomed Megan at the entrance.
He began to lower his head.
She stopped him.
“We agreed.”
Robert smiled.
“No bowing.”
Daniel walked toward them without a limp severe enough to slow him.
Samir stood near the altar with his wife and children, who had finally joined him safely in the United States.
The survivors of the mission were no longer separated by classified files and guilt.
During the reception, Robert raised his glass.
He did not reveal secrets.
He did not turn Megan into entertainment.
He simply said:
“Some people enter a room with a crowd. Others enter carrying the lives they refused to leave behind.”
Megan looked down, uncomfortable with attention.
Lauren touched her hand.
Not to silence her.
Not to control her.
Just to remind her she was no longer alone.
Later, Megan stepped onto the terrace.
The San Diego lights stretched across the coast.
Daniel joined her.
“Do you regret coming to Lauren’s wedding?”
Megan thought about Diane’s cruelty.
The reopened investigation.
The lives changed by the truth.
“No.”
“Even after everything?”
She looked through the windows at Lauren laughing with Samir’s family.
“I regret how long we believed being alone meant being powerless.”
Inside, music began.
Lauren opened the terrace door.
“Megan, come dance.”
Megan almost refused.
Then she followed her sister inside.
The first wedding had tried to reduce her to the woman who came alone.
May you like
The second remembered her as the woman who made sure others came home.
**Would you have forgiven Lauren after she stayed silent during the humiliation, or would her betrayal have ended the relationship forever?**
