Chapter 9 - The Guest in the Silver Dress
Evelyn’s team traced the first request for Daniel’s sealed records to a private investigator.
The investigator had been hired through an intermediary.
That intermediary was Vanessa’s aunt, Patricia Whitmore.
Patricia sat in the ballroom wearing a silver dress and pretending not to notice the growing tension.
She was Richard’s older sister and a silent partner in Whitmore Capital.
When confronted, she did not deny anything.
“My brother was destroying the company,” she said.
Richard moved toward her.
“You gave Lorraine those records?”
“I gave her enough to understand what was at stake.”
Patricia revealed that Richard had borrowed heavily to purchase land around Willow Street.
He had hidden the debt from investors.
If Henry refused to sell, Whitmore Capital would collapse within months.
Patricia wanted the Mercer deal completed to save her own fortune.
Lorraine wanted it to preserve the family’s reputation.
Richard wanted it to hide his failures.
Vanessa wanted to become part of the Mercer empire.
Each of them had a different motive.
Together, they built the trap.
Daniel looked around at the white flowers, the orchestra, the champagne, and the five hundred carefully selected guests.
The entire wedding had been designed to pressure him.
Public vows.
Immediate signatures.
No time to think.
If he hesitated, the Whitmores would accuse him of humiliating Vanessa.
Richard had counted on Daniel valuing peace more than truth.
He had not counted on Lorraine insulting Henry.
Patricia glanced at the ballroom table.
“She ruined everything because she could not resist proving she was superior.”
Lorraine slapped Patricia across the face.
The sound echoed.
Security stepped between them.
Then Patricia laughed bitterly.
“You still don’t understand. The board meeting isn’t about Henry.”
Henry turned toward her.
“What did you hear?”
