Chapter 13 - The Father Who Sold His Name
Daniel’s biological father was named Victor Hale.
He had a history of fraud, assault, and financial abuse.
Claire fled him while pregnant.
After her death, Victor tried to claim Daniel’s trust by arguing that Henry’s adoption was invalid.
He lost.
Then he disappeared.
Three months earlier, Patricia Whitmore found him.
The Whitmores paid Victor to sign an affidavit accusing Henry of stealing Claire’s shares.
They planned to release it if Henry resisted the property deal.
Victor appeared on a video screen before the board.
His face was older, but his voice remained sharp.
“Henry Mercer took my son and built a fortune with money that belonged to us.”
Daniel felt no connection to him.
Only anger.
Evelyn presented the adoption orders, court rulings, and trust audits.
Every transaction had been legal.
Every dividend belonging to Daniel had remained inside the trust.
Henry had not taken a dollar.
In fact, he had personally covered millions in legal expenses without charging the estate.
Victor’s statement collapsed under questioning.
Then Vanessa’s recordings played.
Richard could be heard promising Victor two million dollars if he accused Henry publicly.
Board members who had supported Henry’s removal began shifting in their seats.
The coalition had been manipulated.
The chair suspended the vote.
Federal investigators, already alerted by Evelyn, entered the meeting room.
Victor’s video feed went dark.
Richard’s allies were escorted out for questioning.
Henry remained standing.
But the victory did not bring relief.
He looked at Daniel.
“I should have trusted you with the truth.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You were trying to protect me.”
“I protected you so fiercely that I denied you the right to understand your own life.”
Daniel embraced him.
It was the first time Henry allowed himself to cry.
