Chapter 17 - The Seat Beside His Father
The following morning, Daniel entered Mercer Tower beside Henry.
He wore the same black tuxedo pants from the failed wedding and a plain white shirt.
No one cared.
The board chair formally apologized for allowing outside influence to corrupt the vote.
Three directors resigned.
Two were referred to investigators.
The remaining board members unanimously affirmed Henry as executive chairman.
Then Evelyn revealed Daniel’s trust would mature in six months, on his thirty-fifth birthday.
He would receive his voting rights and a board seat.
Daniel looked at Henry.
“You knew this was coming?”
“Yes.”
“And you never planned to tell me?”
Henry gave a tired smile.
“I planned to tell you after your honeymoon.”
For the first time since the wedding, Daniel laughed.
The sound carried relief and grief at once.
He accepted the future board seat but refused an executive title.
“I’m an architect,” he said. “That is the work I chose.”
Henry nodded proudly.
Daniel proposed that the biomedical campus include affordable housing, a domestic violence resource center, and a scholarship program in Claire and Margaret’s names.
The board approved preliminary planning.
The Willow Street house and maple tree would remain untouched.
The access road would be redesigned around them.
Richard’s land speculation collapsed.
Whitmore Capital entered bankruptcy protection.
Investors filed lawsuits.
The family estate was frozen as a potential asset in the fraud case.
Daniel had won.
But the victory still felt incomplete.
Three weeks later, he received a handwritten letter from Vanessa.
She did not ask him to return.
