Chapter 8 - The Name Daniel Never Saw
Martin told investigators that Lorraine had ordered copies of Daniel’s earliest records.
His birth certificate.
His adoption file.
His mother’s estate papers.
Daniel stared at Henry.
“Adoption file?”
Henry closed his eyes.
The hallway seemed to disappear around them.
Daniel had always believed Henry and Margaret Mercer were his biological parents.
Henry asked everyone to leave except Daniel and Evelyn.
Then he sat beside his son.
“Your mother gave birth to you in every way that mattered,” he said. “But she did not carry you.”
Daniel could barely breathe.
Henry explained that Daniel’s biological mother was Margaret’s younger sister, Claire.
Claire had been nineteen, frightened, and trapped in a violent relationship.
After Daniel was born, she disappeared to protect him from his biological father.
Margaret and Henry legally adopted Daniel when he was six months old.
Claire died in an accident four years later.
Daniel had no memory of her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“We planned to when you were older,” Henry said. “Then your mother became ill. She was afraid the truth would make you feel less loved.”
Daniel stood and walked to the window.
Everything he knew still felt true.
Henry had raised him.
Margaret had held him through nightmares.
Blood did not erase that.
But Lorraine had uncovered the adoption for a reason.
Evelyn opened a sealed estate record.
Claire had inherited a minority stake in a medical technology company from her grandfather.
After her death, those shares passed to Daniel through a dormant trust.
The company had later been absorbed into Mercer Global.
Daniel did not merely stand to inherit from Henry.
He already owned part of the corporation.
His shares had voting rights.
