Chapter 12 - The Question Henry Feared

Daniel called Evelyn from the balcony.

“What happened to Claire’s shares?”

There was a pause.

“We should discuss this with Henry.”

“Tell me now.”

Evelyn explained that after Claire died, her shares were placed in trust for Daniel.

Henry served as trustee.

Years later, the original company faced bankruptcy.

Henry merged it with his growing manufacturing business.

The transaction turned Claire’s nearly worthless shares into a valuable stake in Mercer Global.

Every legal filing had been approved by the court.

But one detail remained troubling.

Daniel’s voting rights had been temporarily assigned to Henry until Daniel turned thirty-five.

Daniel was thirty-four.

Lorraine used that fact to suggest Henry had built his empire by controlling Daniel’s inheritance.

Daniel’s trust shook.

He drove downtown in one of Henry’s cars.

The board meeting occupied the top floor of Mercer Tower.

Security let him inside.

Through the glass doors, Daniel saw powerful men and women arguing around a long table.

Henry stood alone at one end.

Several board members accused him of hiding personal conflicts.

The chair called for the final vote.

Daniel entered.

Every face turned.

Henry’s expression changed.

“Son, you shouldn’t be here.”

Daniel placed Claire’s trust documents on the table.

“I need the truth before anyone votes.”

The room fell silent.

Henry dismissed the attorneys’ objections.

He told Daniel everything.

He had taken control of Claire’s shares because Daniel’s biological father had filed claims against the estate.

The man had wanted access to the trust.

Henry spent years in court protecting Daniel’s inheritance.

He had hidden the details because the biological father was still alive.
