Chapter 2 - The Men at the Door

The ballroom doors opened.
Three men in dark suits entered.
They were followed by two women carrying leather folders and a security officer wearing a discreet earpiece.
Every conversation stopped.
The first man looked around the room until he saw Henry.
Then he walked directly toward him.
“Mr. Mercer.”
He lowered his head respectfully.
“The board has assembled. We delayed the vote as long as we could.”
Richard laughed too loudly.
“What is this supposed to be?”
The man ignored him.
He handed Henry a tablet.
On the screen was a private corporate dashboard.
At the top were the words:
MERCER GLOBAL HOLDINGS
EXECUTIVE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED
Daniel stared at it.
His father fixed lawn mowers for neighbors.
He drove a fifteen-year-old truck.
He clipped grocery coupons at the kitchen table.
Nothing made sense.
Henry turned off the tablet.
“This is not the place.”
Lorraine crossed her arms.
“You expect us to believe this performance?”
The second assistant opened a folder.
Inside was a photograph from an international financial summit.
Henry stood in the center beside political leaders, banking executives, and industry chairmen.
Daniel looked from the picture to his father.
“Dad?”
Henry’s face carried no pride.
Only regret.
“Son, I should have told you sooner.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
Unlike Daniel, she did not look surprised.
Daniel noticed.
His confusion turned cold.
“You already knew.”
Vanessa’s lips parted.
She said nothing.

That silence hurt more than Lorraine’s insult.
👉 Vanessa had not discovered Henry’s identity that night—and Daniel was about to learn exactly when she began lying to him.
