Chapter 3 - Three Months Earlier
Daniel led Vanessa into a quiet hallway beyond the ballroom.
His father and the assistants remained several steps away.
“When did you find out?” Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked toward the closed doors.
“This isn’t how I wanted you to learn.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
She twisted the diamond bracelet on her wrist.
“Three months ago.”
Daniel felt the floor shift beneath him.
Three months earlier, Vanessa had suddenly taken a greater interest in Henry.
She had asked about his childhood.
His old business contacts.
The land surrounding his modest home.
Daniel had thought she was trying to become closer to his father.
Now every conversation felt contaminated.
“How did you find out?”
“My father hired someone.”
Richard appeared at the end of the hallway.
“I protected my daughter,” he said. “That is what fathers do.”
Daniel turned on him.
“You investigated my family?”
Richard adjusted his cuff links.
“You arrived without connections, pedigree, or assets. We needed to know what Vanessa was marrying.”
Henry’s expression hardened.
Daniel remembered every dinner where Richard had mocked his job as a public-school architect.
Every joke about his secondhand car.
Every suggestion that Daniel should be grateful the Whitmores accepted him.
They had known his father was wealthy while pretending Daniel was beneath them.
“Why keep insulting him?” Daniel asked.
Lorraine joined them.
“Because wealth does not buy class.”
Henry looked at her calmly.
“No. But neither does inheritance.”
Lorraine’s smile vanished.
Vanessa reached for Daniel’s arm.
“I was going to tell you after the wedding.”
“After I signed what?”
Her hand froze.
