Chapter 4 - The Contract Behind the Flowers
Henry’s legal counsel arrived carrying a slim black case.
Daniel had met her once before as “Ms. Ellis,” one of Henry’s old friends.
Now he learned she was Evelyn Ellis, chief legal officer of Mercer Global Holdings.
“We reviewed the document Vanessa’s attorney sent this morning,” Evelyn said.
Daniel frowned.
“I never received a document.”
“That was intentional.”
Vanessa looked at her father.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
Evelyn opened the case.
The contract would have transferred any future inheritance Daniel received into a marital holding structure partially managed by Whitmore Capital.
It also contained a voting proxy.
If Daniel inherited shares in Henry’s company, Vanessa could exercise control over them during the marriage.
Daniel read the page twice.
“You wanted access to Mercer Global.”
Richard did not flinch.
“Our company has legitimate strategic interests.”
“You tried to hide them inside a marriage agreement.”
“It was standard protection.”
“For whom?”
No one answered.
Henry stood behind Daniel, silent but steady.
Vanessa began to cry.
“I didn’t understand all of it.”
Evelyn placed another document on top.
An email sent from Vanessa’s private account.
She had written:
Daniel trusts me completely. He will sign after the ceremony if I tell him it is routine.
Daniel looked at her.
The tears no longer moved him.
“You understood enough.”
Vanessa’s face crumpled.
Lorraine stepped between them.
“My daughter was protecting her future.”
Daniel glanced through the ballroom doors at the ring still lying on the table.
“No. She was selling mine.”
Then Evelyn revealed one final attachment.
A list of Mercer properties the Whitmores had already valued.
