Chapter 11 - Vanessa’s Last Bargain
Vanessa held the flash drive tightly.
“It contains recordings from my father’s office.”
Richard’s face darkened.
“You recorded me?”
Vanessa ignored him.
She told Daniel she had begun secretly documenting her parents after discovering the forged property scheme.
At first, she planned to protect herself.
If the deal failed, she wanted proof that Richard and Lorraine had pressured her.
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“You weren’t protecting me.”
“No.”
The honesty surprised him.
“I was scared of losing everything.”
She confessed that she had loved Daniel before learning about the Mercer fortune.
But when her parents revealed who Henry was, she allowed greed to reshape that love.
She agreed to the hidden proxy.
She pushed for the rushed ceremony.
She stayed silent when Lorraine humiliated Henry because she was terrified Daniel would leave.
“And now?” Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked at the ring on the table.
“Now you already have.”
The drive contained meetings between Richard and members of the Mercer board.
It proved they had coordinated the removal vote.
Evelyn could use it.
Daniel called her.
She sent a security driver back for the evidence.
Richard tried to seize the drive.
Daniel stepped between them.
“You touch her, and every guest in that room will watch you get arrested.”
Richard stopped.
For the first time, Vanessa stood against her father.
She handed the drive to the driver.
Richard’s empire began collapsing the moment it left her fingers.
But Daniel did not put the ring back on.
Vanessa looked at him hopefully.
“I helped your father.”
“You helped correct one thing you helped destroy.”
Her face fell.
Daniel walked away.
Then Lorraine shouted after him.
“You think your father is innocent? Ask him what happened to Claire’s shares!”
