Chapter 14 - The Locked Estate Gates
Back at the estate, Richard ordered his driver to bring the car around.
Vanessa stood in front of the main doors.
“You’re not leaving.”
“Move.”
“The police are coming.”
Richard grabbed her arm.
Daniel returned in time to see Vanessa struggling to pull away.
He crossed the marble foyer and forced Richard’s hand off her.
“Do not touch her.”
Richard swung at Daniel.
Daniel blocked the blow and pushed him back.
Security rushed in.
Richard shouted that the Mercers had ruined him.
Daniel stared at him.
“You ruined yourself every time you believed another person’s dignity had a price.”
Police vehicles entered through the gates.
Richard ran toward a side corridor.
He made it as far as his office.
Inside, officers found him trying to burn financial records in the fireplace.
The sprinkler system activated.
Water poured from the ceiling.
Ink bled across forged contracts scattered on the floor.
Richard was arrested for fraud, conspiracy, bribery, document forgery, and obstruction.
As officers led him through the ballroom, the five hundred guests watched in stunned silence.
Hours earlier, Richard had commanded Daniel to sit down.
Now he could not raise his head.
Lorraine tried to follow him.
Another officer stopped her.
She was arrested for threatening Henry, arranging the forged transfer, bribing Martin, and conspiring to obtain sealed records.
Patricia agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.
Vanessa remained in the center of the ruined reception.
Her wedding dress was damp from the sprinklers.
Daniel stood several feet away.
She whispered, “I never thought it would become this.”
Daniel looked at the empty ring table.
“It became this one choice at a time.”
