Chapter 9 - The Cloud Record
The ambulance arrived at St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Medical staff wheeled Lily directly into emergency trauma room.
Doctors checked her vital signs and performed blood tests.
They confirmed presence of heavy sleeping medication in blood.
"She will make a full recovery," the chief doctor said.
"You brought her in just in time, Mrs. Whitmore."
I sank into a hospital lobby chair, utterly exhausted.
My T-shirt was still stained with dumpster dirt grime.
Marcus brought me a paper cup of hot coffee.
"We need to rest now, Rachel," Marcus said quietly.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed loudly down the tiled hospital hallway.
A tall man in an expensive gray suit approached us.
He carried a leather briefcase and wore gold rings.
It was Arthur Vance, the family's corrupt high attorney.
Vance wore an arrogant, smug smile on his face.
"Marcus, Rachel, good evening," Attorney Vance spoke smoothly.
"I am here representing Grandma Whitmore and Vanessa."
Marcus stood up immediately, his fists clenching tight.
"Get out of our sight, Vance," Marcus growled angrily.
Attorney Vance chuckled softly, adjusting his silk tie position.
"I came to give you an official legal warning."
"My clients have already been released on emergency bail."
My heart dropped like a stone into dark water.
"They are free?" I gasped in total disbelief today.
"How could a judge grant bail for attempted murder?"
Attorney Vance opened his briefcase and pulled paper out.
"The judge ruled the video evidence was legally inadmissible."
"The camera was installed on private property without consent."
"Furthermore, we claim video was altered using digital tools."
"My clients are home resting in their mansion right now."
"And they are filing for sole custody of Lily."
I stood up, my eyes burning with lethal hatred.
"They tried to kill my child today!" I yelled.
"You cannot take my daughter from me!"
Attorney Vance leaned in close with a cold smile.
"We have powerful judges on our corporate payroll, Rachel."
