Chapter 4 - The Protective Shield

Sirens wailed loudly as two police cruisers pulled up.

An ambulance turned onto Elm Street with flashing lights.

Red and blue emergency lights flashed across green lawns.

Paramedics leaped out of the back ambulance doors quickly.

They ran into the backyard carrying a pediatric stretcher.

"Over here!" Marcus called out, waving his arm high.

The paramedics set the stretcher down beside my feet.

They carefully took Lily from my trembling, weak arms.

An oxygen mask was placed gently over her mouth.

"Her pulse is weak but steady," the paramedic reported.

"She is suffering from severe heat exhaustion and dehydration."

They lifted the stretcher and rushed toward the ambulance.

I ran alongside them, refusing to leave Lily's side.

"I am coming with you!" I told the paramedics.

"Marcus, handle the police officers!" I shouted back.

Marcus nodded firmly, turning toward two armed police officers.

Officer Davis stepped forward with a black notebook ready.

"What happened here, sir?" Officer Davis asked sternly.

Marcus pointed a firm finger at Grandma and Vanessa.

"My wife found our daughter locked inside that dumpster."

"The outer latch bar was pinned shut from outside."

Grandma immediately stepped down off the wooden porch steps.

She put on a pitiful, grieving grandmother face instantly.

"Officer, please do not listen to this aggressive man."

"My son is going through a terrible mental breakdown."

"My granddaughter wandered into the yard while playing outside."

"My daughter-in-law is hysterical and making false claims."

Officer Davis looked between Marcus and the two women.

Vanessa stepped beside Grandma, nodding her head repeatedly.

"It is true, Officer," Vanessa lied with smooth confidence.

"Rachel has been mentally unstable for several months now."

"She put the child in the dumpster herself!"

"She is trying to frame us to steal estate!"

Marcus let out a harsh, bitter laugh of disbelief.

"You disgusting snakes," Marcus spat onto the grass.

"You think your lies will save you today?"

Officer Davis raised his hand to restore calm quiet.

"Everyone remain calm while we investigate the scene," Davis ordered.

Officer Davis walked toward the large blue metal dumpster.

He examined the heavy iron latch bar very carefully.

He pulled out a small flashlight and shined it.
