Chapter 8 - The Hammer Attack
Second police officer stepped forward and cuffed Grandma.
Grandma struggled against cold steel, shouting angry threats.
"My family owns this town!" Grandma yelled frantically.
"I will have your badge by tomorrow morning, Officer!"
Officer Davis ignored her threats and led them outside.
Marcus walked out behind them, carrying his mobile phone.
Neighbors on sidewalk gasped as police led them out.
Cameras on smartphones flashed from across the street.
Grandma covered her face with her cuffed hands ashamed.
Vanessa was crying uncontrollably, dragging her feet along.
They were pushed into the back of police cruisers.
The heavy metal doors slammed shut with loud thuds.
Police cars drove away with siren lights flashing bright.
Marcus walked toward the waiting ambulance where I sat.
I was sitting beside Lily on the stretcher inside.
Lily was breathing more naturally now under oxygen mask.
Her sweet hazel eyes slowly fluttered open for second.
"Mommy..." Lily whispered softly under her oxygen mask.
Tears of joy flooded my eyes as I kissed forehead.
"I am right here, baby girl," I wept softly.
"You are safe now, nobody will hurt you."
Marcus climbed into the back ambulance with us today.
He wrapped his large arm around my trembling shoulders.
"The police have the complete video footage," Marcus said.
"They are both going away to prison for life."
I looked at Marcus with deep, lingering questions inside.
"Why did they do this to our sweet baby?"
Marcus pulled out a thick envelope from his pocket.
"I found this inside Grandma's office desk drawer."
It was a certified copy of my late father's trust.
My father-in-law had left a five-million-dollar estate.
The trust document stated very clear legal conditions inside.
The entire estate belonged to Lily on fourth birthday.
Today was Lily's fourth birthday party afternoon in yard.
If Lily died before midnight, estate passed to Vanessa.
Grandma had lost all her money in bad investments.
