Chapter 10 - The Financial Motive

Attorney Vance turned around and walked down hospital hallway.
His expensive dress shoes clicked arrogantly on marble floor.
I gripped the wooden chair armrest until knuckles turned white.
"Marcus, we cannot let them get away with this!"
Marcus looked at his phone screen with quiet intensity.
"Vance thinks he knows every trick in book, Rachel."
"He forgot one crucial detail about our dumpster unit."
"What detail?" I asked, looking up at his face.
Marcus pulled up a secondary device application on phone.
"Last month, raccoons kept tearing up garbage bags outside."
"I installed a tiny, battery-powered smart motion sensor camera."
"It is mounted inside the dumpster lid facing downward."
My eyes widened as realization struck my mind fast.
"There is a camera inside the dumpster?" I whispered.
"Yes, a wireless micro camera with night vision lens."
"It recorded everything from inside the container during crime."
"It captured full face angles and pristine audio inside."
"It recorded Vanessa throwing Lily inside the dark space."
"It recorded Grandma locking the iron bar over top."
"And that camera is owned privately by me directly."
"Vance cannot claim property privacy violations for that unit!"
Marcus tapped his phone screen to check data stream.
"The internal video file is fully synced to cloud."
"It contains undeniable, crystal-clear proof of premeditated murder."
"We do not go to corrupt local police now," Marcus said.
"We take this straight to the State Attorney General."
Marcus called an old military contact from his service days.
General Thomas was now head of State Criminal Investigation.
"General Thomas, I need an immediate federal warrant," Marcus said.
"I have absolute proof of child murder attempt and corruption."
General Thomas listened carefully as Marcus explained full case.
"Send me the digital video file right now, Marcus."
"If this is real, I will handle Vance personally."
Marcus sent the encrypted file across secure server network.
Ten minutes later, General Thomas called back to phone.
"This is horrifying," General Thomas said with cold fury.
