Chapter 2 - Rescuing Lily

Marcus slid his hands beneath Lily's cold, limp back.

His white shirt gathered grease stains from dirty trash.

"I have her head, Rachel," Marcus said very firmly.

Together we lifted our daughter out of the dumpster.

My gray T-shirt was covered in dust and grime.

We carefully climbed down the metal side onto grass.

The green backyard grass felt soft under our boots.

I collapsed onto my knees, holding Lily very tight.

Marcus pressed two trembling fingers against her pale neck.

His face went rigid with intense, protective male determination.

"She is breathing softly," Marcus whispered with immense relief.

He pulled his mobile phone from his jeans pocket.

His thumb tapped three emergency numbers with fast precision.

"Send an ambulance to four twelve Elm Street immediately!"

"A four-year-old child was found inside a dumpster!"

Up on the porch, Grandma took one step forward.

She smoothed her light blue blouse with fake calm.

Her voice was steady and completely void of emotion.

"She just wandered outside while you were not looking."

Vanessa's smug, arrogant smile slowly began to disappear.

Vanessa shifted her weight uncomfortably on the wooden porch.

I turned my body sharply toward those two monsters.

I clutched my unconscious daughter tighter against my chest.

Marcus stepped directly in front of me and Lily.

His broad shoulders completely blocked them from coming closer.

"Do not take one more step toward us," Marcus warned.

His voice carried a low, deadly threat of violence.

Grandma stopped in her tracks, her eyes narrowing sharply.

"This is my property, Marcus," Grandma said arrogantly.

"You will not speak to me with that tone."

Marcus did not back down a single inch today.

He stood like an iron wall protecting his family.

Lily let out a tiny, weak gasp of air.

Her eyelids fluttered slightly, but she remained completely unconscious.

The summer heat hummed heavily in the suburban air.

Nearby neighbors began peeking over wooden backyard fences.

They heard the screaming and gathered to watch drama.

Grandma noticed the neighbors and adjusted her calm mask.

She forced a fake tear from her cold eye.

"My poor granddaughter wandered into the trash," Grandma lied.

"We have been searching for her all morning long."

I stood up slowly, clutching Lily against my body.

"You lied to me for two full hours!" I yelled.

"You locked the backdoor so I could not leave!"

Vanessa took a nervous step backward toward porch door.

Her eyes darted nervously toward the large metal dumpster.

Something on the metal container caught Marcus's sharp eyes.

He slowly walked back toward the open dumpster lids.
