Chapter 9 - THE POLICY ON EVELYN’S LIFE
Inside the metal cabinet, officers found a $7 million life insurance policy.
Daniel was the primary beneficiary.
Margaret’s family trust was secondary.
Evelyn remembered buying a small policy after the wedding.
It was worth $500,000 and intended to cover business obligations.
She had never approved a $7 million increase.
The application contained medical information taken from the red binder.
Daniel’s notary stamp appeared again.
The policy had become active six weeks earlier.
Claire joined Evelyn at the hospital while doctors examined the injury to her abdomen.
Nothing was broken, but the fall had caused severe bruising.
Claire placed a copy of the policy on the bed.
“Did Daniel ever ask you to increase coverage?”
“No.”
“Did you undergo an insurance examination?”
“No.”
The insurer’s records showed the examination had been waived because Daniel submitted a recent medical report.
That report had been stolen from Evelyn’s private patient portal.
The same login was used from Margaret’s home computer.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
The company theft was terrible.
The guardianship plan was worse.
The policy frightened her in a way she could not explain.
Claire did not exaggerate.
“We do not yet have evidence they intended physical harm.”
“But?”
“But they prepared to profit from your death without your knowledge.”
A judge issued an emergency protective order.
Daniel was prohibited from contacting Evelyn or entering Verity’s offices.
Margaret was arrested for identity theft, fraud, assault, and evidence tampering.
Daniel was released while investigators reviewed his level of participation.
He sent Evelyn one message before the order became active.
I never wanted you hurt. Mom lost control.
Evelyn read it without replying.
He did not say he never wanted her money.
He did not deny the forged cards.
He did not deny the guardianship petition.
He blamed the visible violence on Margaret while ignoring the quiet violence he helped build.
The next morning, Verity’s chief financial officer called Claire.
Someone had attempted to transfer ownership of Evelyn’s company shares at 2:14 a.m.
