Chapter 7 - THE DOCUMENT BENEATH THE DINNER PLATE
Margaret welcomed Evelyn with a kiss on the cheek.
The bright dining room looked perfect.
White walls.
Fresh flowers.
Cream napkins.
The imported table Evelyn had unknowingly helped purchase.
Daniel poured wine but barely touched his own glass.
Margaret served dinner as though nothing had happened.
Only after the plates were full did she place a folder beside Evelyn.
Inside was a postnuptial agreement.
It granted Daniel management authority over Verity Health Systems during any “period of marital instability.”
It also confirmed Evelyn’s responsibility for the Hale company loan.
“I’m not signing this,” Evelyn said.
Margaret continued cutting her food.
“You will sign, and the transfer will reach the bank by Monday.”
“You forged my name on the original guarantee.”
“That is an accusation.”
“It is a fact.”
Daniel whispered, “Evelyn, please.”
She turned toward him.
“Tell her I’m not paying.”
Daniel looked down.
Margaret pushed back her chair.
“You came into this family acting humble, but you have always believed your money made you superior.”
“My money belongs to me.”
Margaret’s palm struck the table.
The wineglasses jumped.
“Nothing belongs only to you after marriage.”
Evelyn stood.
“I’m leaving.”
Margaret seized the back of her chair and pulled it sharply.
Evelyn lost her balance.
Her hip struck the table.
The wineglass fell.
She landed among the broken pieces, one hand clutching her abdomen.
“You owe this family,” Margaret said.
“Pay it by Monday.”
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
He remained behind his mother.
Then Evelyn’s phone lit up with the message he had sent before dinner:
Don’t cancel the transfer. Mom has plans.
“You both planned this.”
Daniel moved toward her.
The doorbell rang.
Claire had received Evelyn’s automatic evidence upload.
The judge had signed the warrant twenty-seven minutes earlier.
