Chapter 1 - THE PAYMENT DUE MONDAY
“You owe this family.”
Margaret Hale stood over Evelyn in the center of the bright dining room, one finger pointed toward her face.
A wineglass lay shattered across the hardwood floor.
Roast chicken, vegetables, and red wine were scattered beneath the table.
Evelyn had fallen hard against the leg of a chair. Pain burned through her abdomen as she pressed one hand against it and tried to sit up without touching the broken glass.
Daniel stood behind his mother.
He did not help his wife.
He did not even move.
“Pay it by Monday,” Margaret ordered.
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
For three years, she had defended him.
She had told herself he was afraid of disappointing his mother.
She had believed he would eventually choose his marriage when it truly mattered.
Now his wife was sitting on the floor because Margaret had yanked the chair from behind her—and Daniel remained silent.
Evelyn’s phone had fallen beside a broken plate.
The screen suddenly lit up.
A message from Daniel appeared.
Don’t cancel the transfer. Mom has plans.
Evelyn slowly pulled the phone toward her.
The pain in her face changed into something colder.
“You both planned this.”
Daniel finally stepped forward.
“Evelyn, let me explain.”
The doorbell rang.
Once.
Twice.
Then someone pounded hard enough to shake the frame.
Margaret turned toward the windows.
Blue and red lights flashed across the driveway.
Daniel’s face lost its color.
Across town, attorney Claire Donovan had already sent Evelyn’s photographs, bank statements, and identity-theft records to Detective Luis Morales.
The search warrant was signed.
The officers at the door were not there because of a family argument.
They were there because six thousand dollars had been leaving Evelyn’s account every month.
Because credit cards had been opened in her name.
And because someone had used her signature to place a lien on a company Daniel did not own.
Margaret looked back at Evelyn.
For the first time, she had nothing to say.
Evelyn remained on the floor, holding the phone that contained everything.
