Chapter 8 - THE RED BINDER
Officers entered through the front door as Evelyn remained on the floor.
A patrol officer helped her away from the broken glass.
Another photographed the overturned chair and the bruise forming along her side.
Margaret demanded that everyone leave.
“This is my house.”
Detective Morales presented the warrant.
“Then you know exactly where we’re searching.”
Daniel followed him toward the office.
“You cannot take private family records.”
Morales stopped.
“Which records are you worried about?”
Daniel said nothing.
The office door was locked.
Margaret refused to provide the key.
An officer opened it under authority of the warrant.
Inside were two computers, company files, unused credit cards, and a metal cabinet bolted to the floor.
The red binder sat in the top drawer.

Every page concerned Evelyn.
Her Social Security number.
Tax returns.
Verity’s private valuations.
Medical records.
Copies of checks bearing her signature.
A chart listing her passwords and security questions.
The final section was titled TRANSITION PLAN.
It described a three-step process.
First, provoke Evelyn into canceling family support.
Second, document her as emotionally unstable and financially reckless.
Third, use Daniel’s postnuptial authority to remove her from Verity’s management.
A draft letter claimed Evelyn had become paranoid and incapable of making rational business decisions.
A psychologist’s signature appeared beneath it.
Evelyn had never met the psychologist.
Morales found another document.
A petition for emergency guardianship.
Margaret intended to ask a court to place Daniel in control of Evelyn’s personal and business finances.
The dinner had been designed to make Evelyn react.
A small camera hidden inside a bookshelf had recorded the table.
Margaret planned to show only the moment Evelyn raised her voice.
She did not expect the same camera to capture her pulling the chair.
Morales removed the memory card.
Margaret’s confidence disappeared.
“You cannot use private security footage against me.”
“It recorded an assault,” he replied.
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“You were going to call me unstable.”
Daniel stepped toward her.
“I never agreed to file it.”
“Your signature is on the petition.”
“It was a draft.”
