Chapter 10 - THE HUSBAND WHO CALLED IT PROTECTION
The transfer request failed because Claire had placed an emergency lock on Verity’s corporate records.
Daniel claimed the request had been scheduled automatically weeks earlier.
A digital examiner proved he logged in manually.
He used a password copied from Margaret’s red binder.
Detective Morales arrested him before noon.
During questioning, Daniel asked for an attorney.
Then he asked whether Evelyn had been seriously injured.
Morales answered with a question.
“Were you worried when she was on the floor?”
Daniel looked away.
At his first court appearance, Daniel’s attorney described him as another victim of Margaret’s domination.
He said Daniel had spent his life controlled by a powerful mother.
Evelyn understood part of that was true.
Margaret controlled Daniel through guilt, money, and the family name.
But Daniel was thirty-seven years old.
He had stamped forged documents.
He had sent the message about the transfer.
He had signed the guardianship petition.
Fear of Margaret did not move his hand across those pages.
Evelyn filed for divorce.
The announcement spread through Verity’s offices quickly.
Some employees had known Daniel as the supportive husband who attended holiday parties and brought Evelyn coffee during late meetings.
They struggled to reconcile that man with the evidence.
Evelyn did too.
Abuse did not erase every good memory.
It contaminated them.
She no longer knew which moments had been real.
Then Robert Pierce, the former Hale accountant, delivered a box of old files.
Among them was Daniel’s personal journal from a company retreat.
One entry was dated four months after his wedding.
I thought marrying Evelyn would solve everything. Now Mom wants more than the monthly support. She says Verity should belong to us eventually.
The next sentence was underlined.
I know this is wrong, but walking away means losing my entire family.
Evelyn read it twice.
Daniel knew.
He had always known.
He did not participate because he misunderstood.
