Chapter 5 - THE COMPANY THAT WAS ALREADY EMPTY
Hale Family Furnishings still had a beautiful showroom.
Employees polished oak tables beneath warm lights.
Customers saw handcrafted cabinets and expensive upholstery.
They did not see the empty warehouse accounts.
Claire hired a forensic accountant.
The numbers revealed that the company had been insolvent for almost four years.
Margaret used Evelyn’s monthly transfers to keep payroll checks from bouncing.
The credit cards paid for business travel, supplier deposits, and Margaret’s personal expenses.
The $1.8 million loan had covered old debts for only six weeks.
Then $740,000 disappeared into a private investment account.
Daniel had received $210,000.
His younger brother had received $95,000.
Margaret controlled the rest.
Evelyn read the report twice.
“They were paying themselves.”
Claire nodded.
“While telling you employees would lose their jobs.”
The company’s workers were already losing benefits.
Their retirement contributions had not been deposited for eight months.
Margaret had reduced health coverage while buying herself jewelry, hotel stays, and imported furniture.
Claire wanted Evelyn to report everything immediately.
Evelyn hesitated.
“What happens to the employees?”
“The fraud continues if you stay silent.”
“I need to make sure they’re protected.”
Claire studied her.
“That instinct is exactly why they chose you.”
Evelyn looked up.
“Chose me?”
Claire opened Daniel’s old business emails obtained from a shared Verity server.
Months before Daniel proposed, he had sent Margaret an article about Evelyn’s company.
The subject line read:
She may be the answer.
Margaret replied:
Do not rush. Make sure she trusts you first.
Evelyn’s hands went numb.
Daniel had told her they met by chance at a hospital fundraiser.
The emails showed he had purchased a ticket only after learning Evelyn would speak there.
Their first conversation had been planned.
Their first date had followed a strategy.
But another email suggested Daniel later tried to stop his mother.
He wrote:
This is becoming real. I don’t want Verity involved.
Margaret answered:
May you like
Then remember who paid your debts before she did.
