Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE WITH TWO SETS OF BOOKS

Detective Morales joined the investigation after Claire presented the forged guarantee and identity-theft records.

He had worked financial crimes for seventeen years.

“The easiest fraud to hide is fraud committed by someone who knows your passwords, your schedule, and what you’re too embarrassed to report,” he told Evelyn.

He asked whether Margaret kept company records at home.

Daniel once mentioned an office beside the dining room.

Margaret never allowed anyone inside.

During family dinners, the door remained locked.

Detective Morales requested a search warrant.

The judge wanted stronger evidence connecting the home to the fraudulent accounts.

So Evelyn began documenting everything.

She saved texts.

She photographed cards mailed to Margaret’s address.

She recorded Daniel admitting that his mother controlled the loan documents.

Then a former Hale accountant contacted her.

His name was Robert Pierce.

Margaret had fired him after he questioned missing employee retirement funds.

“There are two sets of books,” Robert said.

“One for the bank. One for Margaret.”

“Where is the second set?”

“She keeps encrypted backups in her home office.”

Robert also remembered a red binder labeled E.H.

“What did it contain?”

“Your tax returns, company valuation, insurance records, and copies of your signature.”

Evelyn felt violated in a way bank statements could not express.

Margaret had built a file around her life.

Not as a daughter-in-law.

As an asset.

Robert agreed to give a sworn statement.

That was enough for Morales to seek the warrant.

Before it could be approved, Daniel invited Evelyn to Friday dinner.

“Mom wants to apologize,” he said.

“Does she?”

“She wants to find a solution.”

“What solution?”

He hesitated.

“The bank needs one final transfer by Monday.”

“How much?”

“Two hundred and fifty thousand.”

Evelyn nearly laughed.

“You expect me to send another quarter million dollars?”

“If you don’t, the bank may call the full loan. Verity could be named in the lawsuit.”

“Because you forged my guarantee.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Come to dinner. We can fix this privately.”

Evelyn agreed.

But first, she sent Claire a message.

I’m going. Keep the warrant ready.

👉 Evelyn entered Margaret’s house knowing it contained evidence, but she did not know the family dinner had been planned to force more than a bank transfer.
