Chapter 11 - THE EMAIL HE NEVER SENT
A draft email was saved between the journal pages.
Evelyn,
Before we get married, I need to tell you something about my family’s company. My mother knows who you are and what Verity is worth. She encouraged me to meet you because—
The message ended there.
Daniel never sent it.
The timestamp was three days before he proposed.
Claire recovered an audio file from his old laptop.
Daniel had recorded an argument with Margaret that same night.
“I won’t marry her under false pretenses,” he said.
Margaret answered, “Then explain the gambling debt you hid from her.”
Evelyn froze.
Daniel had once owed nearly $300,000 to online gambling platforms and private lenders.
Margaret paid the debt using money taken from employee retirement accounts.
If Daniel withdrew from the plan, she threatened to expose him and let him face criminal charges.
“You created this,” Margaret told him. “Evelyn is how you repair it.”
Daniel asked for time.
Margaret refused.
“You already made her love you.”
The recording proved Margaret had designed the relationship.
It also proved Daniel knew before the wedding.
Evelyn felt no relief from learning he had hesitated.
A person could recognize evil and still choose it.
That was what Daniel had done.
Prosecutors offered him a chance to cooperate.
If he provided evidence against Margaret and helped recover stolen funds, they would consider reduced charges.
Daniel agreed.
He surrendered passwords to offshore accounts and explained the two sets of books.
Then he asked to speak with Evelyn.
Claire advised against it.
Evelyn agreed to one supervised meeting.
Daniel entered the room wearing a county-issued uniform.
His eyes filled when he saw the bruise along Evelyn’s side.
“I’m sorry.”
She waited.
He continued.
“I loved you.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“More than your mother?”
Daniel could not answer.
Evelyn nodded.
“That is the only answer I needed.”
Before leaving, Daniel told Claire about a storage unit rented under Margaret’s assistant’s name.
Inside were jewelry, cash, and original company records.
But the unit also contained a sealed envelope addressed to Evelyn.
