Chapter 9 - THE COLLEGE FUNDS
Daniel had opened education accounts when each child was born.
Lily’s contained $420,000.
Noah’s contained $310,000.
The money came from company shares Daniel placed aside after a profitable hospital contract.
Claire had no withdrawal authority.
Marcus created a fraudulent “family education consolidation agreement.”
It claimed Daniel wanted both accounts transferred into a private investment vehicle.
The document carried Daniel’s digital signature.
The receiving company belonged to Marcus.
Rebecca showed Daniel the metadata.
“The file was created from Claire’s laptop.”
“Can we recover everything?”
“The transfer was pending. Nothing left yet.”
Daniel looked at the date.
Claire prepared the document two weeks after Noah’s birth.
While Daniel arranged meals, night support, and medical appointments, Claire was planning to take the children’s money.
Marcus expected to invest part of it.
The rest would fund their new life.
A recovered message read:
Once Daniel sees the custody filing, he’ll freeze everything.
Claire answered:
Then move the kids’ funds first. He won’t check because he thinks I’m too overwhelmed to understand finance.
Marcus replied:
What about Lily?
Claire wrote:
She’ll stay with him. She’s attached to the house.
Daniel read the sentence repeatedly.
Claire had already decided to leave Lily.
Noah’s name appeared on the flight insurance policy, however.
She initially planned to take the baby.
Why had she left him behind that night?
Another message explained.
Marcus did not want to travel with an infant.
He called Noah “complicated baggage.”
Claire answered:
Fine. Daniel can keep both until the divorce settlement.
The children had become negotiation tools.
Daniel’s grief hardened into purpose.
He asked Rebecca to seek emergency sole custody.
He also requested a protective order barring Claire, Diane, and Marcus from the children and the house.
Rebecca warned him.
“Claire will claim you are using money and influence to punish her.”
“I’m using evidence to protect them.”
“She may release personal stories.”
“Let her.”
“What about the company?”
“My children carried enough to protect my work. The company can carry itself for a while.”
For the first time in years, Daniel canceled every meeting.
He remained at the hospital until Lily and Noah were discharged.
The custody hearing was scheduled for the following morning.
Claire’s attorneys filed a response just before midnight.
They claimed Daniel’s frequent travel had caused the family crisis.
They accused him of emotionally abandoning Claire.
