Chapter 11 - THE FRIEND WHO REMEMBERED THE LOCKED DOOR
The new witness was eight-year-old Sophie Grant.
During a sleepover two months earlier, Sophie woke after midnight.
She found Lily in the nursery holding Noah.
The bedroom door was locked from the outside.
Sophie became frightened.
Lily told her not to cry because “Mom gets mad when the baby wakes her.”
The girls pushed a chair beneath the doorknob and climbed through the connecting bathroom into the hall.
Claire was downstairs with Diane and three friends.
Music played.
Wine bottles covered the table.
When Claire discovered the children, she blamed Lily for leaving the nursery.
She locked the door again.
Sophie told her mother the next day.
Her mother called Claire.
Claire said the girls had invented a game.
Sophie’s mother accepted the explanation.
Now she apologized to Daniel.
“I should have called you.”
“So should many people.”
The sentence sounded harsher than he intended.
Then he saw her shame.
“You believed an adult.”
“I chose the explanation that required nothing from me.”
Daniel understood that too well.
Police found damage around the nursery lock consistent with repeated use.
The door had been replaced weeks before the kitchen incident.
Claire claimed it broke accidentally.
A hardware receipt showed Diane purchased a lock with an exterior key.
Investigators added unlawful confinement to the case.
Diane stopped cooperating.
She hired an attorney and blamed everything on Claire.
“I raised my children differently,” she said during questioning.
The camera footage contradicted her.
She was the person who taught Lily to prepare bottles, change diapers, and hold Noah while cleaning.
She called it discipline.
The prosecutor called it forced caregiving.
Marcus attempted to distance himself from the neglect.
He claimed he believed Diane remained in the house.
Airport messages contradicted him.
He asked Claire:
Is the little girl really handling the baby?
Claire answered:
She’s done it before.
Marcus replied with a laughing emoji.
Daniel stared at the exchange.
Marcus had known.
He simply considered the children someone else’s problem.
Then investigators searched his office and found files labeled HARPER EXIT STRATEGY.
The plan included a false report claiming Daniel had misused company funds.
Marcus and Claire intended to trigger a board investigation after fleeing.
