Chapter 2 - THE TRIP CLAIRE NEEDED HIM TO TAKE

Three days earlier, Daniel packed for a business conference in Dallas.
He owned Harper Medical Transport, a regional company that moved fragile medical equipment and emergency supplies between hospitals.
The business had grown quickly.
So had the pressure.
A new hospital contract required Daniel to spend two nights away finalizing insurance and delivery terms.
Claire stood in the bedroom doorway watching him fold shirts.
“You should stay through Friday,” she said. “The networking dinner matters.”
“I’ll come home Thursday night.”
“You’ll lose half a day flying back early.”
“I promised Lily I’d attend her school assembly Friday morning.”
Claire smiled without warmth.
“She’ll survive one missed assembly.”
Daniel looked at her.
“She remembers when I miss things.”
“She needs to stop expecting the family to revolve around her.”
Lily was not demanding.
She was careful.
Too careful.
After Noah’s birth, she began asking permission before entering rooms. She apologized whenever the baby cried, even though no one blamed her.
At least, Daniel did not.
Claire called Lily dramatic.
Diane called her spoiled.
Daniel repeatedly told himself they were adjusting to a new baby.
Before leaving, he checked the nursery.
Noah slept beneath a pale blue blanket.
Lily sat beside the crib reading quietly.
“Mom says I’m helping tonight,” she said.
“With what?”
“Everything.”
Daniel crouched beside her.
“You are a sister. You are not Noah’s parent.”
Lily nodded.
But she looked toward the hallway before answering.
Claire appeared behind Daniel.
“She likes helping.”
“I like holding him when I’m sitting,” Lily clarified.
Claire laughed.
“You see? She’s already negotiating.”
Daniel stood.
“Do not make her carry him.”
“No one is making her do anything.”
He kissed both children and gave Lily his private number on a card.
“If you ever need me, call.”
Claire watched him place it inside Lily’s desk.
An hour after Daniel left, Diane arrived with two suitcases.
Claire removed the card from Lily’s drawer.
Then she sent Daniel a photograph of Noah sleeping.
Everything is peaceful.

What Daniel did not know was that Marcus had already booked a private table for Claire that night—and a one-way flight leaving the next morning.
👉 Claire did not encourage Daniel’s trip because she wanted rest; she needed him far enough away to complete a plan already scheduled for sunrise.
