Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN AT THE AIRPORT GATE

Police found Claire and Marcus inside a private airline lounge.

Claire wore the same red dress from the camera footage.

Her passport and jewelry were inside a carry-on bag.

Marcus had two laptops and a hardware wallet containing access codes for cryptocurrency accounts.

Diane was not with them.

She remained at the casino until police called.

Claire’s first question was not about the children.

“Did the transfer clear?”

The detective did not answer.

Marcus immediately requested an attorney.

Claire tried another strategy.

“My husband is controlling. He monitors everything.”

“Your children were alone,” the detective said.

“My mother was there.”

“Your mother left before seven.”

Claire’s face changed.

“How do you know?”

“The cameras.”

She became silent.

At the hospital, Daniel finally answered her call under police supervision.

“Where are my children?” Claire demanded.

“Safe.”

“You had no right to freeze the accounts.”

“Our daughter carried Noah for nine hours.”

“Mom was supposed to stay.”

“You watched her leave.”

Claire lowered her voice.

“Daniel, this looks worse than it was.”

He looked through the glass at Lily sleeping with a heating pad against her back.

“No. It was worse than I knew.”

“You came home early and panicked.”

“I watched every second.”

Claire began crying.

“I was overwhelmed. Marcus offered to help me get away for a few days.”

“With eight million dollars?”

“That money belongs to both of us.”

“Not after forged transfers.”

Her crying stopped.

“Rebecca is turning you against me.”

“The camera recorded you.”

“You always choose work over your family, and now you want to blame me for needing help.”

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“You left a seven-year-old alone with an infant.”

“You weren’t supposed to be home until Friday.”

The sentence revealed more than she intended.

Daniel looked toward the detective.

Claire heard the silence.

“Daniel?”

“You just admitted you expected no one to discover it.”

She ended the call.

The police took Claire and Marcus into custody for questioning.

Diane arrived at the hospital demanding access to Lily.

The social worker blocked her.

“I’m her grandmother.”

“You are named in the child-endangerment report.”

Diane shouted that Lily had always been dramatic.

Lily heard her voice from the room and began shaking.

Daniel stepped into the hallway.

“You will never call my daughter a liar again.”

👉 Claire and Diane continued calling the night a misunderstanding, but Lily’s medical records showed she had been forced into the same role many times before.
